Like it or not, aging is a natural, unavoidable, chronological fact.  At best, especially those genetically blessed, we can hope for a graceful and elegant progression, but there are definite factors and lifestyle choices that accelerate the biological clock.

Sun exposure, particularly UVA rays, is the number one cause of wrinkles, appearance of age spots, reduction in elasticity and premature ageing.  Studies have shown that people who use sunscreen daily have significantly younger-looking skin. Researchers believe that the skin starts chronologically aging around 55, but daily sunscreen application can slow down the pace which means youthful, younger looking skin for longer. A study in the journal, Dermatologic Surgery, suggests that sunscreen could even reverse the damage of photoaging, like wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.

Guys, you’re not immune. Despite the increased risk of developing melanoma, many men just don’t use any sunscreen or moisturising product. It’s as important for men to keep their skin hydrated and protected against harmful rays especially those leading active outdoor lifestyles. One broad spectrum product is better than none and using it regularly will offer basic building blocks to an effective skin care routine.

While we’re on the quest for the elusive elixir of youth, including an effective sunblock to your daily skin care regimen (all-year round – without exception, male or female) together with a healthy lifestyle is the best way to slow down the signs of aging.  The biggest blunder we make is to pack away the sunblock with summer dresses and bikinis. Research confirms that on cloudy, overcast days the harsh UVA and UVB rays can do equal if not more damage than during the summer season.

Not all sunscreens are created equal and some promise more than they deliver. The Commander HQ team loves the SolRx range of products now available at our online store. Originally formulated for triathletes and swimmers, the Original Formula is the optimum defence against UVA and UVB rays.  Spray Dry is a UVA and UVB sunscreen designed to go on dry and will not clog up the pores or affect your grip while being active. It’s also perfect for active kids and gents with balding heads. Personally I am a huge fan of the Dry Zinc SPF 44. Specifically developed for women its clean and clear matte finish is ideal for the face and hands whatever the season.

What you need to know about sunblock and make up:

  • Medical experts and scientists agree that sunscreen is always the final step in your daytime skincare routine. This is how sunscreens are tested to earn their SPF rating.  Any skincare product you apply over a sunscreen dilutes and reduces its effectiveness.

  • Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. Don’t forget your neck and décolletage.

  • Wait 3–5 minutes for the sunscreen to set before applying foundation. Its even better if your foundation, BB cream, or tinted moisturizer contains sunscreen too.

  • Apply the foundation in smooth, downward motions, no rubbing back and forth.

  • Do not use excess pressure or over-blend. The goal is to glide foundation overthe sunblock, not to rub it into skin.

  • Don’t forget the lips. Moisturise and protect from windburn, sunburn and chapping with a SPF lip balm.

If you’re not already in the habit of wearing sunblock every day and committing every sunscreen mistake in the book, it’s never too late to adopt better habits. Invest in the best products available and your healthy youthful skin will thank you for years.
